font-family: georgia;">Global business issue subject (GBI 790) required us to get information from industry manager, thus our group ended-up at KPC. To get first hand information from industrial, our group had visited Kuantan Port Consortium. Our arrival was welcomed by its HR Manager. Then, followed by brief explanation by its GM (marine). Capt. Azah is a very supportive and understanding to us. He allowed us to get experience on how tug boat is working in assisting big ship to berth. At closing session, he gave more informative lecture which related to current economic crisis and expansion plan of the Kuantan Port. His vast experience in shipping industry brought him all around the world such as Australia, US, Japan, etc. The most important thing is he has his own competitive advantage ( a special license to handle a big ship) which the others captain do not have.

rasa macam berlakon titanic la...

Capt. For comfort, CEOs (with MBAs) of Canada’s two largest banks did just fine. While Wall Street bankers had no qualms in gearing their borrowing at 34 to 1, Canadian institutions played it safe with 18 to 1. They are doing well, of course, while their US counterparts are on life support.

<span style=";font-family:";" >A little bit of history<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >The MBA started life in the 1900s (at HBS in 1908). The aim was to train professional managers to run large institutions (like Standard Oil and GM) so that they wouldn’t take undue advantage of markets and consumers. CSR was also strongly advocated. Giant enterprises need to be managed for the public’s good, not for short-term gains.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >After World War II, the Ford and Carnegie Foundations supported serious reviews to modernise the MBA. It was a time of market liberalisation. Nobel-winning economist Milton Friedman and the Chicago School increasingly dominated business thinking. Their ideology glorifies markets as efficient and capable of regulating themselves, and all managers have to do is to maximise shareholder value.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Critics argue that this very thinking got us into so much trouble today. This is the point made by HBS professor R. Khurana in his 2007 book on the history of MBAs, From Higher Aims to Hired Hands, which concludes that business schools (B-schools) have veered from their original purpose of “training managers to rule in the name of society”.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >This new preoccupation with quantitative methods and mathematical models, including the use of advanced analysis, unfortunately gave MBAs the illusion of being able to control financial risks. Moreover, their teaching was flawed by ignoring a good sense of ethics (“largely a waste of time” anyway) and imparting lots of moneymaking know-how.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >I overheard this at MIT-Sloan last summer: “In physical science, three laws explain 99% of behaviour; in finance, 99 laws can explain at best only 3%.”

<span style=";font-family:";" >The trouble with rankings<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >As I see it, BSRs (B-school rankings) are part of the problem. Sure, market pressure from BSRs exert the needed competition to improve curricula and teaching. But undue attention to drive up BSRs can have unintended consequences: (i) higher starting pay means admitting the more mature; (ii) stress on higher paying sectors skewa curriculum to favour Wall Street; (iii) funds are misdirected towards coaching students to perform well at interviews so as to raise job offers; and (iv) the focus on professional education is undermined – instead, students ask: “How can I make the most money?”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Ratings target short performance drivers, and needlessly bias B-schools’ marketing efforts. Prof J.M. Podolny (Apple University and formerly of Harvard, Yale and Stanford) was emphatic: “I do object to the manner in which rankings have legitimised most business schools’ myopic focus on the short term.”

<span style=";font-family:";" >Management education adds value<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >When asked whether the MBA is still relevant, HBS professor Quinn Mills gives a quick and crisp response: “Yes and more than ever.” According to him, business has become more important as financial crises challenge political stability and economic welfare.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >MBA training helps students better understand the ecosystem and master developments. Both are important to the success of individuals in a leadership position.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Mills is convinced the problems in financial markets involve more than the business element. Problems arise in what financial firms are doing to others and to each other, not in how efficiently they are managed. Many say it’s all a leadership problem. If Wall Street firms were better led – less greedy and more responsible - these problems would not arise. Many major MBA programmes emphasise technicalities of finance – training people to work in banks, not to lead them. It is in financial engineering that problems have arisen.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Unfortunately, nations have yet to reform financial regulation. Sad to say, B-schools have not sufficiently revised curricula to reflect lessons from the crisis, though in individual courses and cases, there is much that is now up-to-date.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Financial engineering continues to be taught, but is also updated to reflect disasters that have occurred (complicated securitisation, credit default swaps and complex derivatives) so that similar errors might be avoided in future. Also, ethics courses have been strengthened in response to dramatic cases of fraud (Madoff, Stanford, etc). Hopefully, students are better prepared to meet the world as it now is.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Through it all, acceptances to MBA programmes are significantly up in 2009. Prof Nabil El-Hage (HBS senior associate dean) has this update: “We concluded that teaching critical thinking skill is one area we must do better. Our students go on to be leaders; they need to know how to think and challenge the status quo in a clearly analytical fashion.”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >He adds: “The other, perhaps more mundane, area is risk management. This is difficult to teach. It is not exciting, it is not fun, and it is not so much about leadership. But if businesses focus strictly on the upside and lose sight of inherent risks, then crises are bound to recur. So, we are thinking long and hard about how to deal with this.”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In the final analysis, I believe real change will come through punishment by the one factor B-schools understand best: the market.

<span style=";font-family:";" >A promise to be ethical<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >The original sin of B-schools has been that there has been no real focus on business ethics and CSR. In the post-Madoff era, this is now urgent. But quality teaching is a problem since these “were kind of shunted in” after the early 2000s scandals, wrote P.D. Broughton, in his tell-all book about his years at HBS, Ahead of the Curve. Khurana confirms ethics was brought in like “academic theatrics” and have been since “quietly abandoned or marginalised”.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >But students are not happy. Last summer, I attended Harvard’s Commencement, when new HBS graduates took on the MBA Oath, saying essentially greed is not good. This is a voluntary student-led living pledge to “act with utmost integrity and in an ethical manner” and to guard against “behaviour that advances my own narrow ambitions but harms the enterprise and society it serves”.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >This is not unlike that of Columbia: “I adhere to principles of truth, integrity and respect. Diana Robertson of Wharton doesn’t think it will just fade. “It’s coming from students; we’ve not seen such surge of activism since the ‘60s.” For Khurana, it is now timely to transform business management into a true profession. This will involve licensing and an oversight body to police members. But he is not optimistic this will happen. It’s still very much work-in-progress.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Mills doesn’t see how business can really gain. The management/leadership element of MBA, he says, is too much an art for it to be professionalised. The finance side is already governed by a quasi-professional standard – the fiduciary responsibility rule (a financial advisor is legally bound to put clients’ interests above all). In practice, this rule is already not much honoured by financial advisors, money managers and courts. Mills sees little reason why new professional rules will perform better. He has a point.

<span style=";font-family:";" >How best to regain trust<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >We may not feel it as much in Asia. But even on Wall Street, there is resentment building up on the way MBAs are educated. The world has changed. B-schools have yet to change with it. To reduce distrust, MBAs need to show they value what society values.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >As I see it, what is not taken seriously enough are the “soft” disciplines (leadership, values and ethics) and greater attention to detail (big picture education is not good enough). Leadership responsibilities need to be brought to the forefront – not just the rewards.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >There are no quick fixes. Podolmy pointed to five possible ways: (a) foster greater complementary – integrate the mix of disciplines, linking analytics to values; (b) appoint team teaching – ensure “hard” and “soft” disciplines are jointly taught, giving a holistic understanding of problems and solutions; (c) incentivise qualitative research – cultivate a more eclectic approach, encouraging faculty to better weave “soft” disciplines into the main fabric of education; (d) stop competing on rankings – regain professional focus and downplay money as the end-all of business; and (e) withdraw the degree – oaths work when behaviour is monitored and credentials withdrawn on violations.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >I think these warrant serious consideration. They are difficult to accept and hard to implement. Once upon a time, kings engaged jesters to bring them down to earth. Maybe, it’s now timely for B-schools to do likewise by encouraging faculty and students to prick bubbles, expose management fads, and even rough up “hero” managers. Yes, in a sense, to bite the hand that feeds them.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Realistically, I am convinced such changes are unlikely since it requires B-schools to re-invent themselves. Says Dean Light of HBS: “The crisis has not resulted in a systematic reinvention of curriculum, nor should it.” After all, as in every crisis, enrolment is up. So what’s your problem?

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:12pt;" >● Former banker Lin is a Harvard-educated economist and a British Chartered Scientist who now spends time promoting public interest.
moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-56761528007639203982009-11-10T00:14:00.014+08:002009-11-10T14:53:03.194+08:00OPM 770: CASE STUDY PRESENTATION
This is our last class for OPM 770 -management of operation.

Sometimes its hard to know whether you can do it or not. But how can you know it, if you don't ever try? Trying and doing are 2 different things. While trying is only something in the mind, doing is actually translating what is in the mind. That is why, when we think that we are unable to do something, it's been translated through our action. And as the result, as per what we are thinking. You think?

Hambamaya: Bak kata Nabil, lu pikir la sendiri!!!!

HambaMayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06170970153001101875noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-77784051912065548502009-05-29T00:07:00.046+08:002009-06-20T13:26:45.140+08:00MARKETING PRESENTATION
This is our last subject for this sem-marketing management [MKT 750]. Nothing can change once you already decided. Thus, think with full of ‘iman’ what kind of desired girl you’re going to choose. Combination of these criteria shall be considered:

· Base on her Islamic appearance, but please don’t judge a book by its cover! Never ever being emotional...love has promise nothing but love becomes catalyst for happy life.

· Look for the prettiest in your eyes...never ever ask your friends but ask your deep insight, because pretty is subjective to everybody.

· Look for the rich girl not only in materials but as well as her attitudes. Pretty isn’t long lasting but attitudes will intact forever.

· Education. Never ever argue with women that received secular education because most/many of them are arguable! Woman with religious education background is more patience and know the best practice on how to handle husband. Women are created to ‘accompany/flank’ men. Today secular women interpreted Hawa was made from Adam’s rib, which meant to be loved and protected...yes, once Adam’s rib suppose to be ‘part’ of Adam’s body.

So, men...renung-renungkan dan selamat beramal...
moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-12584169707633712442009-03-27T11:57:00.013+08:002009-03-27T12:11:03.163+08:00JAMUAN 'LAST CLASS' FIN Gambar menceritakan segalanya. 1001 macam interpretation datang dari gambar... nah!!! buatlah interpretation sendiri base on these pics.

moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-45495737734994864652009-02-08T11:19:00.000+08:002009-02-08T11:21:32.335+08:00REPORT ON FUTSAL IIBy: Ahmad Hasnizan.

Amid uncertain political turmoil in Perak and ongoing agony of the Palestinian people, there is still something to cheer on. And it happened right here, in Kuantan, Pahang.

While BN scored 4-0 against Pakatan Rakyat in Perak with the defection of 4 assemblypersons; and Israel scored 1300-13 in terms of the number of people killed, we all scored so much more.

It was not the goals that matter, but the sheer determination and the true spirit of togetherness that we should cheer on. Defying all odds, everybody came from near and far, putting aside various personal difficulties and overcoming the tired feeling of taxing job requirements during the day to play a role in the successful game of Futsal. De Rhu Beach Resort was the place on Wednesday night.

The teams were divided into 2 categories: those whose waistlines are above 34 inches, and those who are below 34 inches. Except for some fiery shots from Rosli and puzzling moves of handful of players, the play was full of people grasping for oxygen and water. Therefore let’s face it; there was not much to brag about the game. Other highlights seem to be worthier of mentioning.

Here are some of the interesting highlights:

- Hamdan drove all the way from Kemaman with his youngest son. He was in the pink of health when he arrived but soon had to return an injured man.
- Hilal picked up Nafis and Nin in a manner that most taxi drivers usually refused to do. Hilal also made some crucial one-two moves during the game, much to his own confusion.
- Azman, a jovial man flushed with cash from Yayasan Pahang loan, did his stretching for the game at a gymnasium 15 kilometres away from De Rhu.
- Hafis, Rosli and Ahmad stretched every ringgit to put their hand on a brand new pair of Futsal shoes, praying hard that the Yayasan Pahang loan shall be forthcoming.
- Abang Wan handled the warm-up session as well as the cooling-down session with techniques that even Alex Ferguson had yet to discover.
- Moha displayed some advanced medical procedures he learned from the doctors in Hospital Kuantan when he quickly attended to Hamdan’s injury. However, Hamdan’s condition turned out to be worse.
- Nin also made a brief but significant appearance on the pitch. Abg Wan, stimulated by Nin’s mesmerizing display of woman football, fire an excruciating shot towards Nin. Nafiz’s eyes were seen to be blazing with fury following this incidence.
- Sulaiman was willing to put his sophisticated DSLR camera to great risk by taking shots at aggressive players. Again, when Sulaiman handed over the camera to Nin, Nafiz’s eyes were blazing with fury.

The night was the night of winners. Those who could not make it this time, (i.e. Reza, Faizal and other ladies) were the only ones who missed the win. Hope to see more of these faces next time.

The usual yamseng session capped the event, with everyone having at least 2 glasses of drinks. Doses of jokes from everybody made all of the winners went back as happier men.

See you later. Without hard working among group members doing discussion, this challenge would been as killing subject. Congrat to every group's member who stayed untill early morning (4-5 am) doing quizzes and assignments. We'll break for one week, so who are felt that he/she is not had enough sleep for past two weeks, please do that for this week!!!

Remember, next subject is managerial finance. Once again our brain will be deeply drilled by AP Dr Omar Samad. Everybody needs to prepare early in all aspects - psychological and physiology. Physiologically, we need to persuade our mind that we are able to go through this subject, and, physiologically, we need to have enough rest and nutritious diet...heheheee (jangan sampai gemuk dah ar)..hahahaaaa....

Anyhow, to all members, if you realised that till at this point we went through all subjects without any big problem. This is because our unity is tied strongly. 'Unite' make Us Strong...everybody may vary in interpretation of word 'Unite' but 'we' have the same understanding....

Oh yea...our new Penghulu is asking us to attend futsal event at De Rhu Beach Resort, Balok this coming wednesday, so hopefully all of us are able to give full support to new Penghulu. Ok...if God willing, we will meet there guys....
moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-45177031228984041882009-01-23T11:48:00.004+08:002009-01-30T09:31:26.086+08:00IT'S CONFIRMED, PENGHULU POSTPONE THE STUDY
Salam to all members...

Well, due to high job commitment, our Penghulu had submitted postpone letter to our study coordinator. Last week class, we saw he was missing from class! all of us felt quite awkward, and of course the most affected person from this situation is...sendiri mau ingat ar...hahaa...

For a semester, we did everythings together, and of course he shown prominent leadership characters - transactional and transformational. His leadership pushed us to realise all events we had planned at beginning of the semester such as futsal, break fast with lecturers, etc...

Anyway, we have to accept that our study shall be our priority even though without our most polite friend as well as Penghulu for our group. We can appoint new leader, and the most suitable person, according to my instinct is Ahmad...heheee...are you dare enough to accept this challenge as a new leader...good luck my friend...
moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-34874850561894455872008-12-20T10:20:00.005+08:002009-01-30T09:32:54.123+08:00NEW SEM WILL BEGIN ON JAN 3
Dear all friends

Well, I think all of us already known our result and congrat to all for excellent result.

En. Nafidz memang pengurus pasukan yang baik. Selain menempah padang, beliau juga pemain yang pertama hadir, tatkala hujan renyai-renyai menyirami seluruh kuantan. Kemudian disusuli penulis dan En. Azman.

Kami bertiga pun menendang-nendang dengan kudrat stamina yang terhad sambil menanti kehadiran pemain lain. Masa dah hampir 20 minit berlalu tetapi kelibat orang lain masih tinggal harapan, sehinggalah tok penghulu datang berseluar slack, tersengih bersimpul-simpul, perasan hensem sambil mengadu tidak mempunyai kasut futsal.

Semoga bertemu lagi.moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5144524977245653675.post-11712245868311225622008-11-03T09:18:00.006+08:002008-11-21T00:50:06.499+08:00MBA Uitm Pahang Group 08/10
Ist Row (from left): Nin, Ilyani, Suzana and, Asma

2nd Row (from left): Rosli, Saiful, Sulaiman, Wan Kamaruddin, Hamdan, Hafiz, Nafis and, Hilal
Behind (from left): Azman and, Ahmad

Left out: Suharni, Reza and, Moha

Programme Coordinator: Assoc. Master study is not the same like doing first degree which is based on exam oriented, but in master, we've to share our knowledge in order to expand our capability to analyse before making any decision.

Ironically, MBA by coursework means 'mari buat assignment', so we suppose to make ourselves ready to any assignment given by lecturers. But, when we work as a team, hopefully, we shouldn't face any big problem and this is the most prominent culture we will learn from MBA. This culture will provide us competitive advantage when holding higher position at our organization. Insyaallah.

Therefore, I as 'penghulu' for our batch as was bestowed by all of you want to stress here that we shouldn't ever being selfish to finish the study. Positive competition among us is good but we've also to build strong relationship to help each other.

Our desire to get MBA will grow till the end of the study and should have strong desire to do DBA/PhD...hahahaaa....

Wassalam.

From:
Saiful Adli Abu Bakar
MBA (08/10)
UiTM Campus Kuantan.moha.mhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01065700126548902188noreply@blogger.com4
